The Shining Mountains by Paul Bennett

Eleven books into a family saga that began with the French and Indian War, Paul Bennett sends the Mallory's west one last time, and I think The Shining Mountains turns out to be the most tender instalment of the series so far. It is a wagon-train novel with tornadoes, bandits and Custer's 7th Cavalry, but the thing it is really about is what a small, loyal group of people will endure for one another, and for two children they believe carry the future

Parts of the book are told in journal form, and are done really well. They carry the emotional weight of the story and there are a couple of lines within them that really hit home. Two deaths (I won't say who!) really shocked me, and I thought the ending was very well done, and sets the series up for the next one! (I'm hoping!)
