THE HUNTER (Chris Spencer #1) by James Manning

Sometimes a book takes you completely by surprise. I remember a couple of years ago a friend urging me to read Red Rising, me saying Sci-fi wasn't really my thing. Long story short, I listened to the audio, and then the following five books all within four months! (They're amazing!)

My point is, on the face of it, this book didn't seem like my kind of thing. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Set in the future, where dinosaurs have come back and humanity lives a divided life. Some people live in the country, in small settlements that are vulnerable to attack. Others dwell in dwindling cities, seemingly thingking themselves above those locked out of their high stone walls.

Chris Spencer is a hunter, a man who earns his living seeking out those who hunt people in the dark. He's good at it too. Despising city dwellers, he keeps himself to the open country, never staying in one place for long. That is until he is summoned to the City, where he will face his most fearsome adversary yet.

What follows is a strong action adventure novel, with well realised characters and an engagingly written plot. There are some opportunities within the book. I never quite got an understanding as to how this world got to where it was (or where within that world we were) but even so I really enjoyed the tale.

As the old saying goes, never judge a book by its cover.
