THE TATTERED FLAGS OF WAR (The Mallory Saga #9) by Paul Bennett

The Ninth instalment of the Mallory Saga!

Have to start with commending the author for having the perseverance to write nine books set in the same 'world' so to speak. Anything more than a trilogy for me is too much! But he's done it, all I can do is read on.

The book is, as with the others, fast moving and straight to the point. I've been re-watching the older Mission Impossible films recently, and there are similarities as to how often the main characters are thrown into the deep end. There is no letup, just one perilous fight after another. Love it!

In this one, Paul explores the early stages of the American Civil War, one that would change history forever and cement Lincoln as one of history's great figures. The Mallory's, Danny and Cal, fight for their leader as mounted infantry snipers, and are as always in the thick of the fighting.

There are a big and varied supporting cast, from Native Americans to European immigrants, and all are brought to life well. It is the plot, as I said above, that really carried this one for me. A relentless tale of an unforgiving time. And I don't think the story is done yet.
