What happens if the bad guys win?
I really enjoyed this book – I think more than I thought I would. In much of fantasy it explores a world in which the good guys beat the bad and restore order to the people. But here we open with the bad guys winning. And then what happens?
Told through the eyes of five people, Mike breathes life in to a world and paints it in dark, blood splattered colour. In short, sharp, punchy chapters we see a day in the life of each character, until they eventually intertwine in what is a fast-moving plot that never really seems to let up.
From servants to generals to street rats scraping a living on the street, we see the war and its after effects from all sides, and when it all comes together at the end it leaves you wanting more (luckily there are two more!)
*this was an audible listen for me, and the narration is superb! Highly recommend if audio books are your thing*
